South Dakotans still ranked highest for well-being, which is based on their perceptions of social, community, health, and financial security. Plus, South Dakota residents don’t have to pay income taxes when they live in the second most tax-friendly state in the country—a perk for seniors living on a fixed income.
Bankrate.com accounted for several factors in determining its retirement rankings this year, including cost of living, crime rates, health care quality, taxes, weather, and overall well-being.
The top 12 best states to retire, according to Bankrate.com’s 2018 list, are:
